Residents of Tsakane and Duduza have shared mixed experiences with the RDP housing application process, with some expressing frustration over lengthy delays while others say they received their homes without difficulties.
During interviews conducted in the communities, several residents spoke about their experiences applying for government-subsidised housing.
A resident who requested to be kept anonymous said she applied for an RDP house in 2018 and is still waiting for feedback on when she will receive a home. According to her, officials informed her that there is a significant housing backlog and that older applications dating back decades are still being processed.
Selina Dubazwane said she applied for an RDP house in 2012 before getting married. However, after her marital status changed and she later followed up on her application, she was allegedly informed that the house was no longer available to her because she had gotten married. “I applied before I got married, but when I went back to check on my application after getting married, I was told that I could no longer receive the house because my marital status had changed,” Dubazwane said.
While some residents raised concerns about delays and uncertainty, others reported positive experiences with the housing program. Johannes Mahlangu said he successfully received his RDP house and did not encounter any problems during the application process. He said his application proceeded smoothly and that he was ultimately allocated a home.
The differing experiences highlight both the challenges and successes associated with the government’s housing program. Residents are calling for greater transparency regarding housing waiting lists, application statuses and the criteria used in allocating RDP houses.
South Africa continues to face a significant housing backlog, with many qualifying applicants waiting years for government-subsidised homes. Housing remains one of the key service delivery concerns raised by communities across the country.
