Schools found operating illegally in Johannesburg

Gauteng Department of Education MEC Panyatsa Lesufi, together with law enforcement recently found Wisdom English Private School in Ivory Park and True Grace Christian School in Ebony Park, Johannesburg operating illegally.

According to allegations, they mentioned schools were found operating illegally because they are not registered with Gauteng Department of Education.

“In 2019, True Grace Christian School was amongst the schools that were shut down. However, the school was opened again at a new location and built two weeks ago. Wisdom English Private School was operating in four different areas in Ivory Park. The environment of both schools was not conducive for teaching of the learners”, he added.

Lesufi said some teachers failed to produce required documents, which allows them to educate learners.

“Some teachers did not have legal identification documents and SACE compliant documents. The suspects were taken to the local police station for questioning. Principals from both schools were also taken to the police station for questioning on contravention of immigration. The schools were closed with immediate effect. The Department of education has started a desktop process, in order to find available space for placement of all the learners who were attending there”, Lesufi said.

He said necessary steps are taken to informed parents of learners. They will also be updated on everything and given a chance to guide on the department’s intervention.
