Mokutu Maliba (37) was shot dead in White City, Soweto on Saturday by an unknown man. It is alleged that an officer of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) was on his way to work at Dube vocational for his night shift, but when he heard gun shots he stopped the car to determine where the sound was coming from.
The Officer saw a man running out of a minibus taxi that was stationary, and as the suspect came out of the minibus he was carrying a firearm.
The suspect realised that the metro police were chasing him then he started firing shots and the officer retaliated by firing three shots. However, the suspect ran away and police officers were unable to locate him. The suspect was last seen wearing a red T-shirt and blue jeans. The body, of the deceased, was taken to the mortuary in Diepkloof and the case is currently under investigation.
Gauteng News spoke to Captain Khosa, spokesperson of Moroka Police Station, “Should anyone be able to locate or identify the suspect we urge you to come forward and report the case. We don’t believe that this incident is related to taxi violence, we’d rather believe that this is a criminal act or any other motive the suspect might have had.”
