Metrorail has taken a decision to suspended train services in all corridors of Gauteng on Monday morning as protests, riots and looting continue in of the province.
This comes after violence and looting spread from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng over the weekend, leading to large scale protests all over the City of Johannesburg.
The spokesperson of Metrorail in Gauteng, Tony Games says the train service has been suspended to ensure the safety of commuters and infrastructure.
“Suspending the train service is not only in Metrorail’s interest but also in the interest of safety of all its critical assets – loyal customers and employees who deserve a safe and secure operational environment,” says Games.
Games says the management of Metrorail has sincerely apologised for this unfortunate announcement and will continue closely monitoring the situation to determine when it will be safe to run the train service.
“Employees and commuters are advised to be extra careful during this period for their own safety and report all incidents to law enforcement agencies,” says Games.
