Bara hospital to minimize postponement of medical procedures

The Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) is currently implementing measures to ensure that medical procedures are carried out timeously.

This was announced by Gauteng MEC for Health, Nomathemba Mokgethi while responding to a question at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

MEC Mokgethi said that the CHBAH was in the process to appoint a dedicated clinical manager who will oversee and ensure efficiency at all 46 theatres at the facility.

The hospital has deferred 870 medical procedures since the start of the year.

“Among the reasons for cancellations or determents are patients related factors such as patients not being fit for surgery with scheduled days of operation,” said Mokgethi.

She said information challenges such as days dysfunctional boilers, load shedding as well as lack of adequate linen due to dysfunctional boilers or laundry machines has also impacted procedures.

“To ensure timely medical procedures at the CHBAH, a contractor has been appointed to repair and maintain the Autoclaves at all theatres, and two additional gas sterillisers have already been ordered,”
