Police have killed four suspects and arrested one in Katlehong during a shootout. This follows a cash-in-transit robbery that took place earlier today at Edison in Langlaagte, Johannesburg.
An unknown number of armed criminals robbed a vehcile after 7:00 am. It is reported that robbers crashed into the money truck with a Mercedes-Benz. The Benz is believed to have been hijacked somewhere in Gauteng. A number of explosives were placed around the cash van. It was bombed open with automatic weapons forcing guards out.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken. The hijacked Benz was set alight and robbers fled the scene in a getaway vehicle. One security guard was rushed to the hospital due to gunshot wounds to the head.
The suspects are believed to be experienced in conducting cash-in-transit heists. This is due to the way they handled this crime.
Police spokesperson Collonel Brenda Muridili said Johannesburg Metro Police K9 unit and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Swat team were informed to launch manhunt and trace the suspects.
“Later today we received information leading to a safe house in Katlehong. Five suspects tried to find their way out by shooting. Four of them were shot dead while one got arrested. While searching the house we found two police radios, unlicensed firearms and two vehicles linked to the one hijacked in Sandon two weeks back and another one in Katlehong last month”, said Muridili.
She said the suspect will appear in court facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of stolen vehicles, unlicensed firearm and ammunitions.
