Gauteng MEC for Transport Jacob Mamabolo has expressed concerns over the number of motorists who are not honouring commitments to renew their driving licenses.
Mamabolo said following a huge outcry by motorists unable to find a spot online, officials availed 17 000 slots to cater for the 35 000 drivers with licenses expiring this month.
He said motorists are not showing up at the licensing centres for their appointments. “Having solved the problem of availability of slots, now people are not honouring the booking that they are making on the system,” said Mamabolo.
Mamabolo said that about 14 000 SMS’s were sent out,but motorists are not responding promptly.
“The point we are making is that we are really appealing to the people of the province that it is very much important that when you get an SMS that says go and renew your license, we have booked to a space that people do so immediately and without failure,” said Mamabolo.
Mamabolo said they will also increase their capacity. “In February, we are looking forward to adding even more capacity into the system. We will be introducing mobile Driving License Testing Centres, ensuring that all law-abiding citizens do not struggle to regularise the validity of their driver’s licenses,” said Mamabolo.
Mamabolo said they are appealing to those who booked slots to actually make sure that they also turn up in periods where they have made those bookings.
