A member of the Gauteng Traffic Police was granted bail today after appearing in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on a rape charge.
The case follows an alleged late-night incident at an apartment building in Arcadia. The accused, 36-year-old Tshwarelo Motala, was granted bail of R3 000 during his court appearance.According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, Motala is accused of raping a 26-year-old woman.
“It is alleged that on 13 April 2026, at approximately 01:00, the accused met the complainant on the fourth-floor staircase of their apartment building in Arcadia, where they smoked together,” said Mahanjana.
She said the accused allegedly persuaded the complainant not to return to her apartment and instead accompany him to the top floor of the building to continue their conversation.
“The accused allegedly pinned the complainant against a wall and inserted his fingers underneath her skirt and into her vagina,” she said. According to Mahanjana, the complainant allegedly pushed the accused away, causing him to fall down several stairs. It is further alleged that as the complainant attempted to flee, the accused got up, grabbed her, pinned her against a wall, lifted her slightly, and raped her.
“After the incident, the complainant reportedly ran back to her apartment and locked the door,” she said.
Although the alleged incident took place in mid-April, the matter was officially reported to police on 23 April.
Mahanjana said Motala was arrested at his home the following day.
During the bail hearing, the State did not oppose bail, saying the accused was not considered a flight risk.
The court granted Motala bail of R3 000 and postponed the matter to 15 July for further investigation.
