Jolidee Matongo elected as new executive mayor of the City of Joburg

The City of Johannesburg held an extra-ordinary council meeting to elect a new mayor on Tuesday, 10 August 2021.

The city’s top job has been vacant for at least a month since the death of the late mayor Geoff Makhubo. Makhubo died of Covid-19 related complications at the start of last month.

The meeting was held in person at the New Council Chamber in Braamfontein.

Joburg metro MMC for finance Jolidee Matongo was then elected as the executive mayor of the City of Joburg.

“I am thankful for the honour and privilege to serve the people as Mayor for the next coming months” said Matongo.

Matongo has Urged the council to put political differences aside with aim to put the needs and daily experiences of Joburg residents first.

“I hope that we will all pull together as political parties in the best interest of our residents, because ours is to serve the people of Johannesburg,” he said.

This is the third change of leadership since the 2016 local elections
