The latest Stats SA QLFS labour market data released in August 2025 shows that Gauteng still carries the largest share of unemployed jobseekers in South Africa, despite a slight improvement compared to earlier in the year. Youth unemployment and discouraged jobseekers continue to place pressure on the provincial economy, particularly in Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and the West Rand.
During the provincial fiscal briefing, the Gauteng MEC for Finance said budget allocations are being channelled toward programmes with stronger labour absorption, including township enterprise support, faster payment cycles for SMEs, and procurement reform aimed at stimulating local economic activity.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi reinforced that youth employment pathways, township revitalisation and safety-linked initiatives form part of Gauteng’s strategy to boost work opportunities.
Economic analysts estimate that between 60 000 and 80 000 jobs could be created in the final quarter of the year, driven mainly by retail, logistics, hospitality and seasonal trade, though many of these roles may be temporary.
